UK Internet Speeds Suck
I can’t think of a more appropriate title; they just do. Let’s start off with me. My ISP charge £24.99 a month for an ADSL internet connection that is supposedly 8megabits per second. I only get about half of this, around 4megabits per second.
Yeah, that is fairly fast for an internet connection here. I actually find that other people can’t download at that speed in my area, even though i’ve personally seen their internet hardware setup, and seen that they don’t use crappy routers that were produced in 1999. The thing is, it isn’t fast at all compared to the speeds the majority of the world get.
The speed that data can travel down fibre optic telephone cables is the speed of light. So, why the fuck are we left with sub-standard internet speeds. I can’t see a reason. On my old ISP’s website they have diagrams of how the further away from your exchange you are, the slower your connection is. I think this is total bullshit. Yeah, just slow down the speed of light why don’t you for the purpose of explaining things? Granted there could perhaps be interference from stuff on the way, but what are these cables made of? Cardboard?
The very fact that the internet speeds of people around this area differ just proves the fact that the speed you get does depend on your ISP in my opinion, because what, everyone’s on a different grid or something? I think that British Telecom should get their act together on this one, and stop faffing around with things people don’t want, and actually focus on the internet and phone infrastructure of the entire UK. I know people that settle for less than 1megabit per second internet speeds, while they all pay a similar price to us for their internet.
Like it or not, BT should do something about it. It’s obvious that the entire internet system is ancient, while countries like China and America get much better speeds than we do in the UK.

Leave a commentThere’s a pretty good reason for the distance to the exchange having an effect on your ADSL sync speed, actually. It’s because of noise on the line - the further away you are, the noisier the line.
The speed you get depends on a few things really. The first one is what I said above, the second is the wiring in your house, and the third is your equipment. Assuming you have a decent router that shouldn’t be a problem. The problem is with BT because all your ISP does is cap your speed at their end to ensure it’s not possible to go over it.
Yeah, I am aware of the noise on lines, but my point is that the entire system should be replaced, i’m sure BT would be able to dramatically decrease the noise on a line if modern hardware and cabling were used. Taking this into account, I don’t really think that the wiring in other houses around me is a problem, but some people have far lower speeds than me, and this is on the same estate.
IMHO the whole damn thing needs revamping, but I guess that would cost billions of pounds. Heh, let’s all get cable.
